ABOUT THE SCHOOL

Queen Eleanor Primary School is a small village school for children aged 5 to 11. The school has just 58 children on the roll and is situated in a tranquil position surrounded by farmland.

Queen Eleanor Primary School takes children from a number of small villages including Thorney, Wigsley and Harby. Children are also welcomed from outside the catchment area.

The School is named after Queen Eleanor of Castile, the Spanish wife of King Edward I. She was devoted to her husband and travelled everywhere with him. On one journey she became ill whilst staying at the Manor House in Harby and died there on 28/11/1290. Whilst this was not very auspicious the school was named in her honour as she was known for her devotion to and love of children. She had thirteen children herself!

The history of formal education in Harby goes back 150 years to when the Church of England started the National School in the village. The Wesleyan Day School that took in pupils from the 1860’s onwards, followed this. The current school building was opened in 1909, although there are some newer sections built in recent times.

There are three classes - a Foundation Stage / Key Stage 1 Classroom with an enclosed outdoor learning area, a Lower Key Stage 2 Classroom and an Upper Key Stage 2 Classroom. There is a small hall which is used for assemblies, dance and dinners (cooked fresh on site). The Key Stage 2 classes both have interactive whiteboards and share toilet and cloakroom facilities off the hall. Key Stage 1 has toilets within the classroom.

The Secretary and Head Teacher share an office and teaching staff have a small staffroom and toilet. Outside there is a recently installed ‘Trim Trail’ of natural wood play equipment and an area of tarmac yard. Beyond this we have a large grassed area shaded by trees along one boundary.
